If I Were Rich

Lately I have made the statement "if I were rich I would..." quite a few times. I think I have brilliant ideas of what to do with money. Somebody should give me a lot, and then I will spend it for them. Because, if I were rich, I would:

1. Buy a house where one room was dedicated entirely to being a library. There would be a fireplace to keep it toasty in the winter. There would be big windows to let in lots of light, and it would look out on a naturey view. By naturey I mean green. Dirt is not nature. It's dirt. And it would be covered from wall to wall with books. Good books. Some of them with really pretty binding, and some of them falling apart because they are so good they get read that much. There would be multiple editions of Austen books. Because I already own multiple editions. As should you.

2. fly to fun destinations for vacation. Often those destinations would be decided by the great book I have just read. Because I can go walk in the footsteps of the characters. Or in the case of nonfiction, I could continue the learning fun. Also, movies that make me want to go places would help me plan vacations. And I could watch that movie ON THE FLIGHT THERE.

3. Have a closet for my purses. Because I want to buy lots of pretty purses. I blame this on Dizzle. She keeps sending me links. She's the devil.

4. Have lots of shoes, preferably ones that don't try to eat my foot like the ones I wore today. Also, I would surgically alter my feet to be the same size. I don't recall this being an issue, but recently my left shoe has been roomier than my right shoe. I think my left foot is shrinking. Also, as a result of trying to keep an even stride and not lose my left shoe, I think my left calf is larger than my right. Sexy.

5. Have my own little pottery studio. Because I like pottery. The end.

You'll notice I didn't put anything of a philanthropic nature on my list. This is because my heart is three sizes too small. Also, because um, duh, I can find some "causes" to support, but if you don't know what they are, most likely we have not met and also you have not read my blog. But mostly because I'm petty and self-centered.

My Brain is More Creative Than Your Brain

I had the craziest dream.

I was at a family reunion at this really nice retreat center somewhere. It was time for the opening dinner, and apparently I had volunteered to help out in some way at this reunion. My mom handed me the napkins, and asked me to set them at each place, which had a place card saying who was to sit there, in some fancy fluffy way, which makes total sense considering my deep love for crafts and all things crafty. Mind you this was a huge banquet hall, and the tables seemed to be arranged in a ginormous horshoe shape, with diners on both sides of the table. As I made my way around the table, I saw my cousin. Apparently we both worked at the high school we graduated from together. I asked him how work was going. He said it was great. I asked him if he was worried about getting laid off and he said no, which I thought was strange because I was fairly certain we were going to get laid off. I didn't have time to warn him about this , though, because I was maybe a third of the way around the tables and people were already starting to eat. As I made my way around the table I got more and more cranky, because I was not done setting their places, and they were already tucking into their food. Finally I got to the last side of tables, and my aunt or someone came and told me to just come and eat. I was a little irritated that she didn't value my fancy napkin settings, and to see that all of the people at that side of the tables had just grabbed a napkin from the pile and didn't care that I had intentions of making their place settings lovely.

I went to take my seat, and was irritated to find that my place had been assigned far away from my sisters who had seats together. At some point I went down a very long slide, like at a water park but with no water, to get to the place the napkins were. I was greated by a girl who was helping with the event, who I think was supposed to be a cousin. I wanted to be irritated with her, because she was making me sit where I didn't want to, and mingle with people instead of just sitting with my sisters, but she was very nice so I couldn't be. So we sat down and had dinner and had a lovely time.

After dinner it had dwindled down to me and a few other poeple. Room assignments had been given after dinner and I had missed hearing where my sisters had been assigned. I was given a key and got on the elevator to find my room. The place we were in was hotel-like. My cousin who I had eaten with went to her room, and somehow I also followed her actions as well as mine in the dream. She had a lovely room with a huge closet, all to herself, because she was rich and her rich mother had payed for the very best. They came to this retreat resort all the time, and she was used to having the best. I went to my room and opened the door to find a very large, nice room that I was sharing with strangers. In the nearest bed, which was like a triple king, there were already two people laying down to go to sleep, a man and a woman (in a clean disney kind of way, people). I was delighted to recognize the man as my college roommate's husband, Brett. I went over to give him a hug and he fell asleep, so I left him to get some sleep as his was obviously exhausted. Wierd, I know. He and the other people in the room were there for a conference for work. I was anxious to know where my sisters' room was and went on a search for it. I don't think I ever found them.

I don't recall going to bed but I must have gotten some sleep somehow. The next day the cousins were all gonig to go on some kind of field trip. We were all intrigued because it was a surprise set up by my aunt. We got in cars, and set out from the retreat center. As we exited the retreat center we crossed a bridge. Every few car lengths, a drop-arm barrier, like you would see at a toll booth or railroad crossing, would come down and stop us. I'm not sure what was going on, but I had the impression that this bridge was like a drawbridge. Except we were spaced out all along the bridge so I'm not sure where it would draw up.

At the other end of the bridge was our surprise. We all gathered expectantly in an office foyer, wondering what the building was. And then of course the dream changed completely into some other little random dreams. So now we will never know what the surprise was. I blame it on K. All the sudden she was there talking about boys and waiting for one to call her.

Perfect Saturday, Take One

My perfect Saturday might be as follows:

1. Sleep in until about 10am
2. Come downstairs to find that someone has made me waffles and sausage. Have a leisurely brunch.
3. Take a Leisurely shower.
4. Go shopping and find the perfect dress/skirt/shirt/coat/other article of clothing for a super good price.
5. Go see a movie with someone like Colin Firth or Patrick Dempsey in it
6. Go for a game of bowling with my very own bowling ball and my shiny purple shoes
7. Go for dinner at a yummy seafood restaurant in Seattle
8. Walk along the pier with dinner companion, and enjoy the clear evening sky and the warm breeze. Have stimulating conversation.
9. Return home and take a lovely long bath in the bathtub that will be in my dream house, while I read a nice piece of riveting literature.
10. Get into my comfy jammies and climb into my comfy bed with flannel sheets and watch Gilmore Girls, or Veronica Mars, or the newest episode of Grey's Anatomy (oh, the candles!) or Pushing Daisies.

My Dream Home: Volume II

So we've covered the hot tub, the nice big tub, and the towel boy. In this edition of My Dream Home, I would like to address another important item every home should have. Books.

I'm pro-book. I think that every home should have at least one. Hopefully you have more than one. I visited a house once during my internship out on the peninsula with this amazing view of the harbor. Sitting in their kitchen, as you looked towards the water, you saw on the wall shelves of books that pretty much covered the wall. They were the kind of shelves that were built in. They extended from one end of the wall to the other above the windows, and I believe the rest of the wall that was not window was pretty much covered in books. I want a kitchen like that. I want a beautiful view and a wall of books. I want lots and lots of cook books so I can cook yummy foods.

Along with the kitchen shelves, I want a library. I want to have a room where the walls are covered in books, like in those movies where there's a library with cozy arm chairs and a ladder that you can scoot around the room because the bookshelves go so high you need a ladder to reach the higher shelves. My library needs to have a fireplace, and windows to let in lots of natural light. The window should also have a good view.

I think that might basically mean that my perfect house doesn't have neighbors. Unless the neighbor is a cute cottage down the way, and they happen to like to bring me baked goods every so often just to be neighborly. Yes, definitely that kind of neighbor could work.

Have I mentioned I've been craving pie?

My Dream Home

I love my house that I live in but I have a few things in mind that I think my roommate KP and I should add to achieve maximum comfort.

1. A hottub. That would be wonderful for my poor back that is one big knot between my shoulder blades and beyond.
2. A towel boy. To fan us when it's hot and fetch us rootbeer and possibly towels for when we emerge from the hottub.
3. A housekeeper. To cook us healthy, flavorful meals, do our laundry, and change lightbulbs.
4. Jacuzzi bathtubs in both our bathrooms. For when the hot tub is too far away and we can only make it the 5 steps to the bathroom.
5. A masseuse. For when the hot tub is just not cutting it.

I'm sure there are more things I could add, but for right now that is all I need in my dream home to make me happy.
