I am a big movie nut. If you did not know that, we have probably not met. Or possibly you don't listen when I talk. Tonight I watched Marie Antoinette with Kirsten Dunst. I know at least a few of you are quite bothered by her, but I find her endearing. Plus she's got dimples, and people with dimples are cute. Also I love period dramas, so I entered into this movie with a great deal of hope. It succeeded in several ways. The clothes were pretty. There were lots of great shoes. All the shots of Versailles were gorgeous. (I've been there- they did not show any shots of the big gravel lot we walked across when we got there, or the busses and cars parked there. Odd.) Kirsten was fairly convincing as a light hearted teenager who found french customs odd, which they were. As someone who is most defnitely not a morning person, I would have to say the whole custom of all the females at court helping the dauphine dress would greatly irritate me. Mind you, I'm not sure how much any of the story matched up with history, but it kind of sparked my interest, so I might just have to read something.
On the down side, we spent a lot of time watching her lie around, and giggle, and eat sweets. (AND she was a stick throughout it all. 'Cause apparently all that lying around helped her to burn off the calories. I should totally try that. I'm going to lie here in my bed and you all can bring me sweets, 'kay? But don't get any ideas. I don't need help getting dressed, or to be woken in the morning by 20 of you standing in my room looking cute while I look... grumpy.) It seemed to drag a little. It was slow at the beginning, then picked up a little, and just when you felt like you were getting somewhere, it slowed down. Then it ended. Abruptly. Not really sure what happened to them after they were taken from Versailles. Also I wasn't really clear on if they went willingly or if the mob was still there somewhere. (I'm sure you all know what happened. I have always had this suspicion that I'm the only one who doesn't remember all this history, even though I'm pretty sure I learned it once. You can laugh at me in my ignorance, but please don't point and laugh. I can't take the pointing.)
And another thing (spoiler here, so skip this paragraph if you want to be surprised). Romantically it left much to be desired. She finally seems to have befriended and seduced her husband, and then a few scenes later she takes a lover. What is that?
All in all it was a pretty movie, but unsatisfying in many ways. One that's good to netflix, but not to own. That's my opinion.
On the subject of tv, every once in a while I happen upon Tim Gunn's Guide to Style on Bravo. It's on tv right now, hence the odd swerve in topic. I love Tim. He's fabulous. But the model they have as his little sidekick is very... unapproachable. That's the only word I can find to describe her right now. I don't want to be her friend. If I don't want to be her friend, why would I let her dress me?
